Why did you decide to become a Key Club officer?

Fall Rally South was my main inspiration to become an officer for Key Club. The cheers, spirit, and connections made through this event were so astonishing because I never expected anything like this to happen in a club. Key Club's inclusiveness was seen during this event and it made me inspired to be involved in this international community including my local social surroundings.

How do you manage being a Key Club officer along with being a high school student?

Within my experiences as a Key Club officer and a high school student, I have learned to use my resources to my advantage. I was able to find new friendships through my position and these friendships are very helpful when I'm in stressful situations. The people I have met are so collaborative with each other and this helped me to improve as an officer. Additionally, with the new world that was put in front of me, I gained new skills such as time management, which helps greatly in both my duties as a student and officer.

What is your favorite part about being a Key Club officer?

My favorite thing about being a Key Club officer is definitely the new friendships that are made throughout the year. Yes, members are also able to make new friends through Key Club, but being an officer allowed me to reach beyond my comfort zone and find new people that share the same passions as me. Through several events and meetings that officers are required to attend, they are very beneficial in many aspects. I was able to find new friends from different divisions and within our division including learning new skills with them. Key Club is such a vast organization that you can make friends from all over the country if you wanted to, and that is why I love being an officer so much.

Why did you join Key Club?

Before I began my junior year, I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. I wanted to join a club that provided a lot of volunteering events so I can help my community. But I also felt very lost regarding who my true friends were and the significance of having any friends. When I talked with my cousin, he recommended Key Club because it had all the attributes I was looking for. I joined Key Club in freshman year at Cypress High School, but it didn’t reach my expectations. When I transferred to Kennedy, I decided to give Key Club another chance. I was able to make some long lasting friendships while still being more involved. I’m thankful that I joined because I never would’ve met such great friends.

How have you changed since you became a member?

I surprisingly became more excited to volunteer. I didn’t care if we had to wake up at 4 a.m. (rose float parade) or go to school on a weekend (school cleanup) as long as I was doing it with my friends. They motivated me to work hard and have fun at the same time. One thing I also learned was to give every opportunity a chance, because you never know what you can lose and gain.

Lauren Byun

Senior- Class of 2021

Why did you become a Key Club officer?

I decided to become a Key Club officer after learning I loved to serve and would love to expand it to serve both my school and community!  I was encouraged to join the big Key Club family after all it had already done for me and I'm happy to have taken that initiative that year.

How do you manage being a Key Club officer along with being a high school student?

I manage being a Key Club officer and high school student by staying organized and utilizing both physical journals/to-do lists and digital calendars and memos. However, knowing that both Key Club and school can be flexible helps a lot though I try to stick with personal deadlines and goals!

What is your favorite part about being a Key Club officer?

My favorite part about being a Key Club officer is seeing the behind the scenes work and being able to feel its outcomes. When our volunteer events were in-person, it was very gratifying to be able to work with people and help people be happy. While the ability to serve is not confined with being a Key Club officer, the position helps see what goes on and what people make these things possible.

Why did you become a Key Club officer?

I became a club officer because I wanted to improve my speaking skills while making new friends along the way. I also wanted to be an officer because compared to other club, Key Club felt like a close family rather than just an ordinary club.

How do you manage being a Key Club officer along with being a high school student?

There are two key components toward managing your time as a key club officer while living your high school life. First, you need to know your deadlines; if you don't know your deadlines, how are you supposed to manage your time? And second, communicate with your President if you have struggles in your schedule. Communication is key and without it, your relationships within the club is withered.

What is your favorite part about being a Key Club officer?

My favorite part of being a Key Club officer is seeing how many leaders combine the spirits to serve the earth. When people view a Board of a club, they seem them as the real leaders; however, the members also working hard to serve as leaders along with the Board.

Andrea Kang

Senior- Class of 2021

Why did you become a Key Club officer?

In Junior year, I became an officer mostly because of my friends who said that there would be exactly enough space for me if I applied. The former president also encouraged me, and though I applied on such short notice, the fun experiences that I encountered that year made me determined to apply again in my Senior year.

How do you manage being a Key Club officer along with being a high school student?

It's definitely tough to manage both club and school work, especially since I'm not amazing at managing my time and I get distracted easily. I tend to overthink and be a perfectionist as well, but even though I often sleep really late and get stressed, I think the phrase "Perseverance is key" really applies to what I do. Even though some of the work is tedious or can get frustrating, I overall enjoy my job, and I think that's really important to balancing everything. Of course, I'm still a very lacking officer who might rely on her partner a lot and often loses track of things while tending to neglect the website, but I believe that I grew a lot through my experiences.

What is your favorite part about being a Key Club officer?

My favorite part is being close to the other officers. Being part of a close-knit board, especially one that has to work more closely because of the pandemic brought us closer, and I really am thankful that I made a lot of new friends. I feel that even though I'm older than most of them, they can be more mature than me and it's quite fun to see that. I also like my job specifically, just because I always liked to take pictures and work with digital art.

Why did you become a Key Club officer?

From viewing the events Key Club has hosted like fundraisers, I love how people were content for the club. Joining the club my sophomore year has been one of the greatest experiences in my high school journey. Participating in service events to serve our community, meeting other members with the same goals of creating a safeKEY environment, to attending the DCMs, have been factors that have made me grow as a leader and the best person I could be! I aspire to become a leader of Key Club, to continue its legacy, and become a person's light in serving our home, school, and community!

How do you manage being a Key Club officer along with being a high school student?

Ever since I was in middle school, I have been in leadership classes that focused on organization and techniques to utilize my resources wisely. Before being an officer, I have become an inclusive member in supporting fundraisers, participating in service events, communicating with members, and attending meetings. The bonds I have made within Key Club before joining and during my officer term are some of the motivational and supportive ways pushing me to complete my officer tasks. Manging my time as a Key Club officer alongside being a high school student has not only allowed me to further grow as a leader inside the club but, I have grown as a better individual! As a result, my time management skills have greatly improved which has helped me balance my time in the club and my personal life.

What is your favorite part about being a Key Club officer?

My favorite part about being a Key Club officer is organizing events for members to participate and create memories. It brings great joy when others are happy as everyone should feel content in their lives. Being apart of the greatest accomplishments and moments makes me feel fortunate in life. Establishing new friendships is also another great thing about being an officer as well as they bring out the best person I can be, by being expressive in my beliefs and see life from a different perspective.
